British Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Destinations
British authorities has included 11 new countries to its official alert list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This updated travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Just last month, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to several notable events including the tragic demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic chemical commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
Although it is generated during the creation of spirits, licensed producers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Official Recommendations for Travelers
Government representative a senior official emphasized that every traveler should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.
"When you are having drinks abroad, opt for reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," the official said.
