Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The winter game drop for Minecraft has touched down — and it includes the initial fresh armament added to the title since the mace made its debut. The spear is now available and it has the potential to change how you play Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.

A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem

The Mayhem Mounts drop also introduces several new features and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we desired a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also made sense for the intended purpose."

If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a major applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and making some real mayhem," she teases.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it should be made an competitive event right away.

Another major addition in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it transport you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no need to come up for air for fresh air.

The rest of the additions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also unveil something for underwater," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also notes that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you find underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some highly requested changes to riding horses. Now, you can cross bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

In summary, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the pandemonium it invites — would have felt like a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
