Significant Online Disruption Impacts Dozens Websites and Apps

A widespread online failure has impacted dozens online platforms and applications worldwide, with users reporting problems accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s web hosting platform.

The impacted services include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-operated operations such as its main retail platform and the Ring security home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected in addition to its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with additional accounts of difficulties accessing the HMRC site on that morning. Also in the UK, many Ring customers took to social media to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, notifications of disruptions on individual apps reached the many thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the east coast of the America at AWS, a unit that provides essential internet backbone for numerous companies, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting platform.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect seemed to affect platforms around the world, and the Downdetector site indicating problems with the same sites in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a rise in problems on Monday morning, including several cases found in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where the company stated the problems started.
