The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
