Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Following Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his disappointment that the England team did not get more support from the Wembley crowd during their impressive 3-0 friendly victory on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his squad maintain their winning momentum, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages effectively ending the match. Yet, he was unhappy with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a drilled team and we performed excellently,” the coach stated. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional ones. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the team deserved better encouragement today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than leading three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more support in moments where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from potentially starting a dispute among fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the choice was validated by Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his position.”
Wales Manager Seeks Improvement from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that his team, who host a strong Belgian side in a important qualifying match on next week, take lessons from their disappointing first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” the manager stated. “I need to see our current level. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today fills me with inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at the break after hitting a post and is a concern when England play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
